Women's health physiotherapy incorporates the management of pelvic floor dysfunction, mastitis, and abdominal wall separation.
We are committed to helping women who experience pelvic floor dysfunction and leakage (incontinence).
The pelvic floor muscle could be dysfunctional due to tension or weakness. The most common symptoms experienced are:
Leaking (urinary incontinence aggravated by stress or urge).
Involuntary voiding (overactive bladder)
Pain with intercourse (dyspareunia)
Pain with urination or passing bowel motion.
Prolapse (bladder or uterine drooping out of the vagina).
While it is commonly believed that these are post-natal issues, pelvic floor dysfunction could happen at any stage in life.
Research shows 33% of postnatal women experience involuntary leaking following childbirth and 21% of Australian women report pelvic pain.
(Glazener, C. M., Herbison, G. P., Wilson, P. D., MacArthur, C., Lang, G. D., Gee, H., & Grant, A. M. 2001) & (Pitts, M. K., Ferris, J. A., Smith, A. M., Shelley, J. M., & Richters, J. 2008).
Physiotherapy can help reduce pain, improve symptoms of incontinence and increase the quality of life.
Women’s health requires specially trained physiotherapists who will provide a thorough assessment and design a treatment plan for a woman’s needs and personal goals.
Your first women’s health session will be an hour-long and will include your physiotherapist taking a comprehensive history that covers presenting issues, bladder function, incontinence symptoms, sexual history, symptoms of prolapse, and medical history.

What is women's health Physiotherapy?
Women’s Health physiotherapy addresses the assessment and management of conditions related to the pelvic floor, pre & post-natal conditions, incontinence, pelvic pain, organ prolapse and physical changes with menopause. Women's health physiotherapy addresses a range of issues affecting women from young age, through child bearing years to menopause and beyond.
What to expect at your appointment?
At Sydney Health Physiotherapy our trained physiotherapist will take a comprehensive history to understand the patient’s pelvic floor function, sexual and obstetric background and bowel & bladder function. This will be followed by a detailed objective exam to help the therapist understand and develop the best treatment plan for the patients.
Women's health specialised physiotherapy involves the treatment and training of your pelvic floor muscles. We will guide you through techniques that focus on relaxing the overactive muscles, releasing the tension, cueing, directing contractions, and feedbacks to resolve pelvic floor dysfunction.
You can expect the treatment program to be educational and resourceful. We will also be orchestrating lifestyle management, home exercises, and supportive devices to help you through this journey and take back control with comfort and confidence.
